July 2010
MCHA Newsletter
MCHA members had the unique opportunity to
participate in NCHA days in two
locations-Lewisville, Idaho and Douglas, Wyoming.
Both shows were top notch produced and well attended
by the Montana Cutting Horse Association members.
MCHA would like to extend a very heartfelt Thank You
to both associations; Wyoming and Idaho. What a job
well done!!
No one can deny that July offers some serious
cutting in Montana now-First off is Big Timber,
which offers a historically prestigious, community
supported, down home outdoor cutting. The McGuane’s
have worked toward making everyone, from locals to
beginners, to haulers comfortable and welcome. Big
Timber is followed by the three day cutting at the
Sapphire Event Center, July 19, 20 and 21st. An
awesome facility paired with great added money
equals the July Sapphire Event Center Cutting. The
Big Timber and Sapphire cutting each offer an Angela
Bauer Youth Scholarship Cutting, so MCHA’s youth
here’s not one, but two opportunities to cut for
some college green! July closes with the MCHA’s
co-produced cutting at the Brigg’s Ranch in
Whitehall. With the cooperation and great effort
extended from Dean and Wendy Brigg’s this show
promises to offer low, low fees, fresh, fresh cattle
and a wide assortment of classes from novice
two-handed to open. I know I will see you all there!
Reminder to the membership, it is that time
again—the nomination committee consisting of Dave
Weyer, Mike Willey and Donald Weeding are waiting
for your nominations for the three MCHA board member
seats that will be coming up this year. Please take
the time to contact these guys and share your ideas
on the members you would like to see sitting on and
representing you on the 2011 board. This is your
association with ample capable and talented
individuals to fill these seats. So let these guys
hear from you!
August promises several opportunities for MCHA
members to get out there and show their horses, from
weekend warriors to the kick of off of the aged
event season. Great Falls, Lewistown and Henry’s
Lake-Montana and Idaho-it just don’t get much better
than that! See you there!

have gotten the job done without each and every one
of you riding for and supporting Montana; so thank
you to all. A special congrats to Wyatt and Fallon;
claiming Champion and Reserve in the Sr. Youth
class. Wow that Nuttall crew is something and we are
proud of you guys!
June offers MCHA cutters the chance to participate
in NCHA days in Douglas Wyoming, as well as
Lewisville Idaho. Both areas have put together a
great show-so take your pick and go a cuttin’.
June 18-20th is also the NCHA convention in Fort
Worth. MCHA would like to extend a huge thank you to
our three Montana National Directors; Buddy Westphal,
John L Dublin and Bill Parker. It is very easy in
the mix of everything to overlook just all the hard
work and support these three very talented
individuals give to our association. Your dedication
to Montana, MCHA and the NCHA is without a doubt
unsurpassed and your devotion to improve the sport
of cutting in Montana and everywhere by striving to
make the best better benefits our association
hugely. THANK YOU!
Just like the temperature, the cutting in Montana is
going to heat up in July. Big Timber to Corvallis to
Whitehall: three great shows with three great venues
and three great opportunities to cut in Montana! See
you there!!

you to all the producers.

High School Rodeo Association approved cuttings will
be held at the March and April Yellowstone Empire
Cuttings. Thank you to Bill and Jann Parker for
supporting our youth.
There are two clinics planned this spring. A Faron

Montana Information:
The first Montana CHA approved cutting is just over
one month away. Now is the time to pay your dues.
Both horse owner and rider must be Montana CHA
members before cutting in order for earnings to
count toward standings.
Note to members not living in Montana or Wyoming:
Please notify the National Cutting Horse Association
that you want your earnings to count toward Area 4.
You need to do this before the first cutting. This
helps Montana qualify more riders/horses for the
Eastern/Western National Championships. If
riders/horses are in the top 10 in Area 4, then we
are able to drop down in our affiliate standings and
qualify more riders/horses. Your earnings are
automatically posted to the Area that includes your
state/providence. If you live in Montana or Wyoming,
you do not need to contact the NCHA - your earnings
will be posted to Area 4.
Montana’s 2010 cutting season is about to kick
off, but before we move ahead to that, I would like
to acknowledge MCHA’s top successes from last year.

MCHA Newsletter
As the incoming President of the MCHA, I would like
to express my heartfelt belief that the upcoming two
years will be filled with growth and reward for the
Montana Cutting Horse Association. I would also like
to welcome our new Vice President, Will Nuttall; as
well as our new directors: Tom Campbell, Bambi Gress,
Cody Lee, Suzanne Nellen and Youth Director,
MacKenzie Banner. I would also like to thank the
outgoing members of our board whom have done a
terrific job in leading and guiding this association
the last two years: Todd Wirthlin, Donald Weeding,
Todd Banner, Karla Camp, Shirley Williams, and youth
director Macall Banner—thank you guys for a job well
done.
If any MCHA members have had any doubts about how
this association truly operates as a wide spread
family, well then I’m sure those doubts were wiped
out after the New Year’s Celebration and Benefit for
Todd Banner and his family held in Corvallis this
New Years. The fund raising efforts were kicked off
with a clinic given by Randy Holman, Will Nuttall
and Zane Davis. Seventeen of us got to soak in all
we could from these guys-It was great-thank you
Randy, Will and Zane-what an educational and fun
clinic. The clinic was followed that evening by a
benefit dinner and auction at the Woodside Grange
Hall in Corvallis. What a dinner!! A huge thank you
to Dave Markette, Don McAfee, Kathy Markette and
John Schuler, as well as Allison and Jeffrey of
course. The hall and dinner was paid for and
prepared 100% by these guys. Again thank you and wow
what a meal! Jim and Diane Ellis, Cindy Garoutte,
Susie Lucchesi and Betsy Talermo did a terrific job
organizing and pulling together a top notch benefit
auction to conclude the evening. The fund raising
efforts concluded New Year’s Day with a benefit
cutting held at the Sapphire Event Center in
Corvallis. For all their hard work and donation of
their facility for the clinic as well as the
cutting, I would like to thank John and Cindy Stefka;
as well as the numerous others who donated and gave
from cattle to trucking to time. Surely, I will miss
thanking some, but please know that your giving was
not overlooked. Bottom line; an exciting and awe
aspiring weekend was had by all; and the best part
is that when all the dust settled, we had raised
right around $20,000 all for the benefit of one of
our own: Todd Banner and his family. Thank you to
all!
The MCHA Board of Directors will be meeting January
23rd in Bozeman. If anyone has any items to be
placed on the agenda please contact me or any board
member. The 2010 MCHA season will soon be underway-
See You There!
